Scholarship Overview

The Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship supports African students pursuing higher education at SOAS to develop expertise in sustainable development. The scholarships aim to:

  • Cultivate a new generation of African leaders for sustainable development
  • Promote long-term collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and scholars
  • Empower students to address global challenges and effect meaningful change

Scholarship recipients will gain access to:

  • Networking events and seminars hosted by Hyundai Motor Group
  • Academic and professional activities as alumni
  • Junior Internship Program opportunities for master’s students

For 2026/27, seven scholarships are available:

  • Six for full-time master’s programes (1 year)
  • One for full-time research degree (MPhil/PhD) programes

Scholarship Benefits

Master’s Award: £27,730, covering tuition in full; any excess is provided as stipend.
PhD Award: Covers tuition fees for up to four years and provides an annual stipend of £22,780, paid termly.

Eligible programes include:

  • Any full-time (1 year) master’s degree programe
  • Any full-time research degree programe
  • Focused encouragement for applicants in Development Studies, Economics and Finance, Law, Anthropology, and Politics

Exclusions: Part-time and two-year master’s courses; pre-sessional courses are not funded.

Candidate Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be African nationals ordinarily resident in Africa
  • Be international fee-paying students
  • Apply for new admissions starting 2026/27
  • Hold or expect to receive:
    • Master’s applicants: First-class honors degree (UK equivalent)
    • MPhil/PhD applicants: Master’s degree with distinction (UK equivalent)
  • Meet SOAS English language requirements by the time of enrolment

Applicants may submit their scholarship application before receiving an offer of admission, but an unconditional offer is required before the selection panel meets.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed based on:

  • Academic merit: Degree results, transcripts, references
  • Alignment with sustainable African development: Relevance of chosen programe to Africa’s growth and transformation
  • Complete programe and scholarship applications must be submitted for consideration

Important: Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Notification

  • Shortlisting and award decisions are expected by June 2026 at the earliest
  • Successful candidates will be contacted first, followed by unsuccessful candidates once all awards are allocated
